As expected, the "all others" wagering interest was the heavy 6-5 favorite after the first day of betting in the first Future Wager pool for the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) was completed Feb. 8.
The mutuel field, the 9-5 morning line favorite that consists of all 3-year-old Thoroughbreds other than the 23 individual horses in the pool, was a 6-5 bettors' choice when opening day wagering closed late Friday evening.
The "all others" wagering interest was followed by four Todd Pletcher-trained horses headed by unbeaten Verrazano (KDFW wagering #20), who was the individual KDFW Pool 1 choice at 7-1. He was followed by reigning 2-year-old champion Shanghai Bobby (#17), and Revolutionary (#16), both at 8-1, and Violence (#21), who was a 9-1.
The Pletcher quartet was followed by Goldencents (#9) at 10-1, Itsmyluckyday (#11) at 21-1, and Flashback (#7) at 22-1.
The KDFW offers advance wagering on the May 4 race at odds that could be significantly different than the prices available on the day of the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I).
A total of $178,437 was wagered during Pool 1's opening day at racetracks, off-track betting centers, and online at advance deposit wagering outlets. The total includes $157,136 in win betting and $21,301 wagered in the exacta pool. Wagering will resume at noon (EST) Feb. 9 and betting will conclude at 6 p.m. Feb. 10. This is the first of three KDFW pools.
Each KDFW pool offers $2 minimum win betting and exacta wagering, which is available in the form of $2 minimum straight exacta bets or $1-minimum exacta boxes and part-wheels. No scratches or betting refunds are permitted in the Derby Future Wager, but betting on an individual horse will be suspended immediately if Churchill Downs determines that an injury, illness or other circumstance revealed during the pool would prevent that horse from competing in the Kentucky Derby.
