Gerard Melancon became the 65th North American jockey to ride 4,000 winners when he guided Doc R U It to victory in the sixth race at Delta Downs Jan. 30 (VIDEO).

Sent off as the second choice in the 10-horse field of $4,000 claimers, Doc R U It won by two lengths for owner-breeder Jodie Winn and trainer Glynn Winn.

"I've had a very blessed career," said Melancon, 45. "Reaching 4,000 wins is special to me. All my family and friends came to the track tonight and I thank them for their support over the years."

Melancon, a native of Louisiana, posted his richest win when Sabercat won the $1 million Delta Downs Jackpot (gr. III) in 2011. He also won the $500,000 Super Derby (gr. II) at Louisiana Downs with Fantasticat in 2004 and the $400,000 Vosburgh (gr. I) with Bonapaw in 2002.

Melancon has ridden in 26,789 races and his mounts have earned over $63 million. He was leading rider at Delta Downs in 2007-08 and 2008-09. In 2007-08 he set Delta Downs marks with 146 winners and more than $2.8 million in earnings.
