Churchill Supports Ky. Equine Humane Center

The Churchill Downs Foundation awarded a $10,000 grant to the Kentucky Equine Humane Center for general horse care.

John Asher, Churchill's vice president of racing communications, and Dana Johnson, Churchill's senior director for corporate responsibility, visited the Equine Humane Center Dec. 17 to present the check.

"This grant will be used to support the general health of our horses. That includes general veterinary care as well as farrier and teeth care," said executive director Karen Gustin in a release. "We are extremely grateful to the Churchill Downs Foundation for this support."

The Kentucky Equine Humane Center, located in Nicholasville, Ky., provides humane treatment and shelter while working as a clearinghouse to seek adoptive homes for Kentucky's unwanted equines, regardless of breed.

Horses are surrendered to the center, and staff works with them to improve their health, train them, and then adopt them out to homes. An average of four to six horses a month are taken in and adopted out.
