Potesta, the 2012 Hollywood Oaks (gr. II) winner who suffered a career-ending condylar fracture to her left foreleg during a Sept. 14 workout in California, recently arrived at Three Chimneys Farm near Midway, Ky., for her engagement in the Keeneland January horses of all ages sale.
The 3-year-old Macho Uno filly captured the Sept. 2 Torrey Pines Stakes by 7 1/2 lengths in a track-record 1:34.86 going a mile on Polytrack at Del Mar before suffering the compound condylar fracture high above her ankle. The injury occurred during a six-furlong breeze at Betfair Hollywood Park, where trainer Mike Mitchell was prepping Potesta for a start in the Sept. 29 Zenyatta Stakes (gr. I) at Santa Anita Park with an eye on the Breeders' Cup Ladies' Classic (gr. I).
Potesta will be offered as hip number 134 by Three Chimneys Sales, agent, at the upcoming sale which will be held Jan. 7-11.
"She was an outstanding race mare that performed at a top level during her career, beating grade I winner Eden's Moon in the Hollywood Oaks," said Guinness McFadden, director of sales for Three Chimneys. "She is absolutely gorgeous, I wouldn't change a thing about her. She is a big mare, a little over 16.2 hands, and has a very nice walk and way about her. If she can pass on half of her race ability and good looks, she will make an amazing broodmare."
The filly won three of four career starts for owners Joe Scardino and Anthony Fanticola before sustaining the injury, for which she underwent emergency surgery at Alamo Pintado Equine Medical Center near Los Olivos, Calif. She was bred in Kentucky by Maynard Farm and B. A. Man out of the Furiously mare Katzen, and was purchased for $75,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky fall yearling sale in 2010.
