European Champion Ibn Bey Dies in Japan
Ibn Bey, a four-time European champion who ran second to Unbridled in the 1990 Breeders' Cup Classic (gr. I), died in Japan on Dec. 10. The 28-year-old son of Mill Reef had spent his entire stallion career in Japan and was pensioned in 2007. Racing for Fahd Salman, Ibn Bey was a four-time group I winner. In Germany, he won the 1989 R+V-Europa Preis (Ger-I) and the 1990 Grosser Preis der Berliner Bank (Ger-I) and was a champion both years. In Italy, he captured the 1987 Gran Premio d'Italia (Ity-I) and was that year's champion 3-year-old male. He was an Irish champion the year he won the 1990 Jefferson Smurfit Memorial Irish St. Leger (Ire-I). Ibn Bey was a group II winner in England and France and group I-placed in both countries. He finished sixth in the 1989 Japan Cup (Jpn-I). In the Breeders' Cup Classic at Belmont Park in his final start, Ibn Bey was beaten a length by Unbridled at 38-1 for owner Yustane Sohma. Ibn Bey exited racing with a record of 10-3-4 from 28 starts and earnings of $1,626,059. Bred in Great Britain by Lord Porchester, Ibn Bey is out of the High Top mare Rosia Bay and is a half brother to English group I winner Roseate Tern. Rosia Bay is a half sister to 1985 Budweiser-Arlington Million (gr. IT) winner Teleprompter and the dam of two-time Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf (gr. IT) winner Ouija Board. Ibn Bey's runners include Japanese group I winner Taiki Herakles.
