Chris Mellerick, co-owner of Larkhill, a sales prep and boarding operation near Paris, Ky., was killed the evening of Jan. 10 when his vehicle ran off I-64.
He co-owned the operation with his wife, Angela. They set up their operation on Ruddles Mill Road in late 1999. Both of them had previously worked for several years at 505 Farms near Lexington.
"He was an excellent horseman and a good guy to work with," said Kellyn Gorter, a trainer at 505 that worked with Mellerick. Gorter said. "I considered him a friend."
According to Gorter, Mellerick had been a good steeplechase rider in his native Ireland before coming to the United States. Prior to working at 505, Mellerick had trained on his own at the Kentucky Horse Center. At 505 he broke and galloped horses, and later managed a couple of the training barns.
