Trainer Howard Zucker is uncertain whether Bringem Jung, a third-place finished in a Santa Anita allowance race Dec. 26 won by Werblin, will make his next start in the San Miguel Stakes on Sunday or wait until Wednesday for an allowance race.
"He galloped today and he'll blow out tomorrow," Zucker said. "If he looks good breezing tomorrow, we'll probably enter and see what it looks like. There's another race that suits the horse on Wednesday, a seven-eighths race that we were kind of pointing for. The horse seems to be a little better with a little more distance."
Bringem Jung (Salt Lake--Fotofanatic, by Search for Gold) earned his maiden win at Santa Anita Nov. 4 in a 6 1/2-furlong race. He raced next in the allowance race won by Werblin, finishing six lengths behind the winner in the six-furlong race.
Zucker said he had been leaning toward running Bringem Jung "where he belongs," the allowance race, "but if the San Miguel is coming up similar to a first-level allowance, maybe we'll go for the extra money and help fill out the card a little bit, too."
One more likely for the San Miguel is Sunny Slope Stakes winner Roman Dancer. The Christopher Paasch trainee finished sixth in the Hollywood Prevue Stakes (gr. III) last time out.
"He's a definite sprinter and I don't think he got a hold of that track at Hollywood Park," Paasch said, referring to the Prevue, in which he came home nine lengths behind the winner, Fonz's. "I just don't think he liked it real well. He showed us that he likes this track (where he won the Sunny Slope). I want to try him on the grass his next start after this one, provided everything goes right. We'll look at the Baldwin (6 1/2 furlongs on the grass on Feb. 24) after that."
A New York-bred son of Polish Numbers, Lorraine and Rod Rodriguez's Roman Dancer has won two of five career starts.
Probable for the San Miguel, according to Santa Anita, are: Bringem Jung, Alex Solis; Expected Program, Tyler Baze; Roman Dancer, Kent Desormeaux; Gold Dollar, no rider named; Popular, Victor Espinoza, and Royal Moro, Goncalino Almeida.
