Uptown Bertie, winner of the Iowa Oaks (gr. III) June 30 at Prairie Meadows, died Nov. 13 due to complications from colic according to co-owner Richard Klein.

Klein bred and raced the 3-year-old daughter of More Than Ready  De Bertie, by De Niro, with his parents, Bertram and Elaine Klein. Following a fifth-place effort in the Oct. 6 Indiana Oaks (gr. II) she had been given some time off according to Klein and they planned on racing her at 4. A few days ago she was transported to Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington for “a couple of issues.”

Trained by Steve Margolis, Uptown Bertie won three times, ran second three times, and third twice from 12 starts and earned $227,439. She won 1 1/16-miles Iowa Oaks by 2 1/4 lengths in 1:43.34 over Ice Cream Silence. Prior to her effort in the Indiana Oaks she was unplaced behind Questing in the Alabama Stakes (gr. I) at Saratoga.

Uptown Bertie was a full sister to stakes winner Get Ready Bertie and a half sister to grade III winner Whirlie Bertie (by Stormin Fever  ). Her dam, De Bertie, won four stakes including the Rampart Handicap (gr. II) and Sabin Handicap (gr. III).
