When the hammer fell at $1.6 million for Musical Romance at the Fasig-Tipton auction in Kentucky Nov. 5, Adam Lazarus, managing partner of Pinnacle Racing Stable, said members were "ecstatic."
Pinnacle Racing Stable owned 50% of Musical Romance, the 2011 Eclipse Award winner as champion female sprinter. Representatives of Northern Farm, the Japanese entity owned by Katsumi Yoshida, placed the winning bid.
Lazarus said Boyd Browning, president and chief executive officer of Fasig-Tipton, told him Yoshida plans to send Musical Romance to Japan, where she will be a broodmare. Musical Romance, a 5-year-old daughter of Concorde's Tune, was consigned to the Fasig-Tipton November sale by Three Chimneys Sales Agency.
Several other broodmare prospects sold at higher prices than Musical Romance. But the $1.6 million price exceeded the $1.2 million reserve set by Pinnacle Racing Stable and Bill Kaplan, Musical Romance's trainer and 50% owner.
"We are sad about saying goodbye to her," Lazarus said. "This is the final chapter in what has been an amazing story."
Kaplan and a 10-member Pinnacle partnership bought Musical Romance for $22,000 at the Ocala Breeders' Sales Co. April auction in 2009. She is out of the Slew Gin Fizz mare Candlelightdinner and was bred in Florida by Ocala Stud.
Kaplan's base is Calder Casino & Race Course in Florida. Lazarus and most of the other Pinnacle partners live in the Miami-Fort Lauderdale area.
Lazarus said Japanese and Europeans did most of the bidding on Musical Romance.
"We are very pleased that foreign buyers, especially Japanese, showed strong interest but disappointed that there was not more American interest," he said. "Maybe there was some concern about her pedigree. But her record shows she was durable and versatile."
Kaplan began racing Musical Romance exclusively in sprints in mid 2011. Prior to that, she was stakes-placed four times in two-turn Calder races, twice on turf and twice on dirt.
Musical Romance won 12 of 41 starts and earned $1,681,885. She won nine stakes, including the 2011 Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint (gr. I) at Churchill Downs.
In her final race Musical Romance finished sixth Nov. 3 as she attempted to repeat in the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint at Santa Anita Park.
