A New Twist upset 3-10 favorite Forest Heiress by 3 1/2 lengths Sunday in the $100,000 Old Hat Stakes for 3-year-old fillies on a showery day at Gulfstream Park. In her most recent start prior to the Old Hat, A New Twist finished second to Forest Heiress in the Valley Stream Stakes (gr. III) at Aqueduct.

Ridden by Edgar Prado, A New Twist pulled away from Forest Heiress and the field of seven in the stretch, covering the 6 furlongs in 1:10.61 on a fast track. French Satin finished third, a length behind Forest Heiress. Excellent Choice, Darby Haven, and Take the Cake completed the order of finish.

How About It propped on the turn, causing jockey Eibar Coa to fall to the track. Coa complained of soreness after the race, but did not appear to suffer serious injuries.

A New Twist earned $60,000 for the win and paid $10.60, $2.20, and $2.10. Forest Heiress returned $2.10 and $2.10, and French Satin paid $2.10 to show. The exacta returned $15.80.

A New Twist, a daughter of Storm Cat trained by John Kimmel, is owned by her breeder, Lucille Conover, and George Bolton. She has won two of four career starts, earning $109,355. (Chart, Equibase)
