The connections of Ireland's Coolmore Stud have purchased a 50% interest in multiple graded stakes winner Shanghai Bobby, installed as the 2-1 morning line favorite for the Nov. 3 Grey Goose Breeders' Cup Juvenile (gr. I) at Santa Anita Park.
A son of Harlan's Holiday trained by Todd Pletcher, Shanghai Bobby is undefeated in four career starts while racing for Starlight Racing. In the Breeders' Cup, the colt will race in the name of Starlight, Mrs. John Magnier, Michael Tabor, and Derrick Smith.
After breaking his maiden in impressive fashion at Aqueduct in April, the colt took a listed stakes, won the Hopeful Stakes (gr. II), and the Champagne Stakes (gr. I).
Bred in Kentucky by Stonehaven Steadings, Shanghai Bobby was purchased for $105,000 at the 2011 Keeneland September yearling sale.
Starlight managing partner Jack Wolf said he is looking forward to the partnership and that all management decisions will be shared by the ownership entities.
"They are in partnership and management decisions will be made by both partners," Wolf said. "This horse has done everything we have asked of him. I am flattered they want to be in business with us."
Noting that Pletcher has had success training top horses for both Starlight and Coolmore, Wolf said "This is a partnership that could not have happened without Todd. This is a good deal for them and for us."
