A minor injury to Outofthebox will preclude the 4-year-old from running in the Feb. 9 Donn Handicap (gr. I) and trainer Steve Flint will now try to prepare the Florida-bred colt for the March 30 Gulfstream Park Handicap (gr. I).
"He suffered a minor injury to an ankle last week when I was blowing him out for the Hooper Handicap at Calder," Flint said. "I was going to use the Hooper as a prep for the Donn Handicap but now I'm going to have to take it easy with him. The vets said he could start training in a couple of weeks but he's too good of a horse to mess around with so I'm going to give him around 30 days."
The son of Montbrook won at the Gulfstream Park Handicap distance of 1 1/4 miles in his lone try at the trip, that coming in the $500,000 Super Derby (gr. I) in September. Since then, Outofthebox raced against older horse twice, finishing third in the Fayette Stakes (gr. III) and ninth in the Clark Handicap (gr. II). Outofthebox raced at Gulfstream Park three times last season, winning an allowance race and finishing second in both the Fountain of Youth Stakes (gr. I) and Florida Derby (gr. I).
"He's handled this track well in the past and I can't complain about the track," Flint said, referring to the injury. "It's just one of those things that happen in racing. If everything goes all right then we'll see if we can get him ready for the Gulfstream Park Handicap in late March."
