Dullahan worked five furlongs on the dirt track at Santa Anita Park Oct. 27 under Tammy Fox in a minute flat. Trainer Dale Romans said a decision on whether the Pacific Classic (gr. I) winner would run in the $5 million Breeders' Cup Classic (gr. I) or the $3 million Turf (gr. IT) at Santa Anita Nov. 3 would likely not be rendered until shortly before entry time Oct. 29.
"I thought he went really good," Romans said shortly after the 9 a.m. drill. "I haven't talked to her (Fox) yet, but he went fast and he looked good doing it."
Oct. 27 proved to be a busy day for workouts by horses preparing for the Nov. 2-3 Breeders' Cup World Championships. All workouts are listed at the end of this story.
Dullahan is pre-entered for the Classic at 1 1/4 miles on dirt and the Turf at 1 1/2 miles.
"We'll talk to her and Jerry (Crawford, owner, who races as Donegal Racing). It'll be Jerry's decision. We'll have a meeting with (Fox) and see what she says," Romans said. "There's no rush, but by entry time on Monday, we'll have it settled by then."
Dullahan's three career wins have all come on synthetic surfaces in grade I races. The 3-year-old son of Even the Score is winless in four turf starts and winless in six races on traditional dirt.
Asked his thoughts about that, Romans was resigned to his fate. "Well," he said, "they wouldn't change this to Poly for me, so there's nothing I can do about it. We'll see what happens."
Shackleford , second in last year's Dirt Mile (gr. I), went five furlongs with Fox up in a minute flat as the 2011 Preakness Stakes (gr. I) winner prepares for another go in the Dirt Mile. Also for Romans, Little Mike (Turf or Mile, gr. IT) worked five furlongs on Santa Anita's grass course in 1:01 4/5, while Moonwalk (Juvenile Fillies Turf, gr. I) went the same distance in 1:01 3/5.
In other Breeders' Cup works at Santa Anita, unbeaten Juvenile Fillies (gr. I) favorite Executiveprivilege worked six furlongs for Bob Baffert in 1:14 1/5 in company with stablemate Sir Allison, who was clocked in 1:14 4/5. Martin Garcia was aboard Executiveprivilege, who will be ridden by Rafael Bejarano in the Juvenile Fillies.
Meanwhile at Keeneland, Klaravich Stables and William Lawrence's Sum of the Parts, winner of the Stoll Keenon Ogden Phoenix (gr. III) Oct. 5, capped his major preparations for a start in the 1.5 million XpressBet Breeders Cup Sprint (gr. I) by working a half-mile in :47 3/5 under jockey Julien Leparoux.
On a drizzly, foggy morning with temperatures in the mid 40s at Keeneland, Sum of the Parts covered the first quarter-mile in :24 and galloped out five furlongs in 1:00.
"I have probably worked 10 horses this morning and he's just different," trainer Tom Amoss said. "He is quicker to the wire than the rest and he is in hand doing it. He has always been a good work horse and I like where he is."
It was the third work on the Polytrack for Sum of the Parts, a 3-year-old Speightstown colt since his opening-day victory as he prepares for a return to dirt at Santa Anita.
"Obviously, he likes it," Amoss said of the Polytrack. "I felt better leaving him here and on a morning like this after all the rain, if we were at Churchill you could forget it. Here you don't have to adjust your training schedule. It's business as usual."
Leparoux, who has ridden Sum of the Parts to three victories and a second-place finish the four times he has been aboard, will have the mount at Santa Anita. Prior to working Sum of the Parts, Leparoux guided Luch Racing Stable's Global Power through a half-mile in :50.
Global Power, who is pre-entered in the $1 million Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint (gr. IT), is the first horse on the preference list for the Turf Sprint and would need one defection from the pre-entries to make the 14-horse field. Amoss said Pat Valenzuela would have the mount should Global Power, a 4-year-old colt by Pulpit, make the Turf Sprint field.
Since joining Amoss' barn in late spring, Global Power has three victories and a third-place finish in four two-turn grass races with stakes victories at Delaware Park and Louisiana Downs. This year's Turf Sprint is 6 1/2 furlongs down the hillside course at Santa Anita as compared to the five-furlong distance last year at Churchill Downs.
"If it was five-eighths, no way he'd run," Amoss said of Global Power, who has had three main-track works here since finishing third in the Remington Green on Sept. 30 at Remington Park.
The two horses are scheduled to ship to California Oct. 29. Amoss said both colts would receive gate and paddock schooling as part of their Santa Anita preparations.
Multiple graded stakes winner Willcox Inn , pre-entered in the $2 million Breeders' Cup Mile (gr. IT), worked Oct. 27 for the second time since his runner-up finish to Wise Dan in the Shadwell Turf Mile (gr. IT) Oct. 6. With assistant Hilary Pridham aboard for trainer Mike Stidham, the colt worked five furlongs in 1:00 4/5 in company with Every Way, a 2-year-old City Zip filly who was third in the Mazarine (gr. III) at Woodbine Oct. 6.
Clockers caught Willcox Inn in splits of :12 3/5, :24 1/5, :35 4/5, :48 1/5, 1:00 4/5, and out six furlongs in 1:14 4/5.
"The work went just like what we had planned," Stidham said. "Sit off of her and then come to her down the lane. He inched by her in the last part. We weren't looking for anything too serious because he's a fit horse, but that work was just what I was looking for."
Stidham said James Graham will ride Willcox Inn in the Mile, in which he will face Wise Dan and other rivals, including 2011 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) winner Animal Kingdom .
"Our horse traditionally — especially going a mile when there's going to be pace in front of us — he'll be sitting back," Stidham said. "I'm not sure how far back, depending on how fast they're going up front. He's always got a really good kick like he showed in the Shadwell. We're just hoping the kick that he has is good enough."
Stidham said Willcox Inn, a 4-year-old Harlan's Holiday colt who races for Lael Stables and All In Stable, will ship to California Oct. 28.
The fourth Breeders' Cup pre-entrant to work on Oct. 27 was James Covello's Oscar Party, fourth just beaten a neck in the JPMorgan Chase Jessamine (gr. IIIT) Oct. 11. The 2-year-old Dixie Union filly worked five furlongs in 1:00 3/5 and galloped out six furlongs in 1:13 4/5 under jockey Kent Desormeaux for trainer Wayne Catalano.
"She was out in the middle of the track and she was just flying out there,"' Catalano said of Oscar Party, who is scheduled to leave Oct. 30 for a run in the $1 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (gr. IT) Nov. 2. Desormeaux, who has ridden the filly in her past two starts, retains the mount.
