Experienced Danalake Set for Pocahontas
Trained by Todd Pletcher for owner and breeder Sheldon Nitenson, 2-year-old filly Danalake finished first or second in her four starts at Delaware. She won the Our Mims Stakes at one mile Aug. 22 before finishing second to Martha's Moon in the 1 1/16-mile Blue Hen Stakes Sept. 29.
The daughter of Friends Lake, the only stakes winner in the Pocahontas, is expected to face seven other juvenile fillies in her first start away from Delaware. Julien Leparoux has the call on the 120-pound high weight, and they will break from post 4.
Alex Gans’ Iroquois Racing Club’s Gal About Town will try for her third win in as many starts. The City Zip filly won her career debut by 3 1/4 lengths at Monmouth Park in September before posting a 3 3/4-length win on the Keeneland Polytrack in an allowance race Oct. 6.
Gal About Town, who will be saddled by Jay Severs for her first try in stakes company, breaks from the outside in post 8 under Jesus Castanon.
With just one start for trainer Al Stall Jr., Sign is the least experienced filly of the bunch, but she made sure her debut was noticed. She took a maiden special weight event at Saratoga Race Course by 11 3/4 lengths under Rosie Napravnik, who will be aboard the filly again Sunday when they break from post 6.
Prior to finishing eighth in the Darley Alcibiades (gr. I) at Keeneland, La Song was just a neck behind Gold Edge in the Arlington-Washington Lassie (gr. III) at Arlington Park. The Wayne Catalano-trained filly will break from post 2 under Corey Lanerie.
Another filly with stakes experience is Live Oak Plantation's Seasoned Warrior. The Bill Mott-trained Seasoned Warrior broke her maiden at Saratoga in August and then ran fourth behind So Many Ways in the Spinaway (gr. I). In her most recent start, Seasoned Warrior ran third behind Kauai Katie in the Matron (gr. II) at Belmont Park. She drew the rail in the Pocahontas under Joel Rosario.
Along with the Iroquois Stakes (gr. III), the Pocahontas is one of two feature races on Saturday’s Churchill card, which opens the 21-day fall meet. The card is a Stars of Tomorrow day, featuring 2-year-olds in all 11 races. The Pocanontas is a "Road to the Kentucky Oaks" prep season race.
