Speightstown colt brings $440,000 at Fasig-Tipton
A gray son of Speightstown provided some late fireworks near the conclusion of Tuesday's second session of Fasig-Tipton's October Yearling Sale at Newtown Paddocks near Lexington, Kentucky. Whipser Hill Farm was the winning bidder at $440,000 for the February 2 Kentucky-bred, who was offered as Hip No. 820 from the consignment of Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent.
The session-topper was produced by Betty's Pet (Dehere), a full sister to Group 3 winner Millions and a half-sister to the Group 3-placed Young Senor (El Gran Senor) and Brentsville (Arctic Tern). Another half-sister, Sister of Paris (Dayjur), reared French juvenile highweight Elusive City (Elusive Quality) and the stakes-winning producer Parisian Affair (Mr. Greeley).
Betty's Pet and her siblings were all produced by the multiple stakes winner Liturgism (Native Charger). Among the other various graded winners from this female line is multiple Grade 1 heroine Coup de Fusil (Codex).
Regis Farms bought the second and third highest offerings on Tuesday, including Hip 641, a daughter of Malibu Moon, for $265,000. The April 7 bay was offered by Warrendale Sales, agent for Spendthrift Farms.
Produced by Canadian stakes winner Velvet Snow (Subordination), the filly hails from the extended family of 1975 champion three-year-old colt Wajima (Bold Ruler) and his half-brother, multiple stakes winner and noted sire Naskra (Nasram). More recently, this female family produced Grade 3 winner Bittel Road (Stormy Atlantic).
Regis Farms also signed the ticket for a Bandini half-sister to current Grade 2 winner Trinniberg (Teuflesberg) that went for $250,000. Consigned by Romans Racing & Sales, agent, the New York-bred sported Hip 811.
The filly was produced by the stakes-placed Bella Dorato (Goldminers Gold), whose most noted offspring is the three-year-old Trinniberg. Winner this term of the Grade 2 Woody Stephens, Grade 3 Swale and Grade 3 Bay Shore, the Grade 1-placed earner of $673,300 is presently bound for the Breeders' Cup Sprint on November 3.
This female line once yielded Cavalcade (*Lancegaye), who captured the 1934 Kentucky Derby.
A Malibu Moon colt sold to David Robbins for $180,000. Consigned by Three Chimneys Sales, agent, the April 21 chestnut toured the ring as Hip 688.
Produced by the Grade 3-placed stakes winner Wishful Splendor (Smart Strike), the Kentucky-bred is a half-brother to Juanita (Mineshaft), winner of the 2011 Grade 2 Indiana Oaks and 2012 Grade 2 La Troienne. Wishful Splendor has also reared the stakes-placed Sirocco Strike (Forestry) and Isla (Unbridled's Song).
This is the extended family of Da' Tara (Tiznow) and Denis of Cork (Harlan's Holiday), one-two finishers in the 2008 Belmont Stakes, and Grade 1 vixen Private Persuasion (Pirate's Bounty).
FLAT JACK (Flatter), a March 24 West Virginia-bred colt, was gaveled down to Whitefish Stable for $165,000. Hip 716 was offered by Hill 'n' Dale Sales Agency.
A son of Adena's Girl (Personal Flag), Flat Jack is a half-brother to the multiple stakes-placed Ready and Tough (Good and Tough). Adena's Girl is herself a half-sister to stakes winner Chess Move (Avatar) and to Whiffling (Wavering Monarch), the dam of champion 1993 three-year-old Prairie Bayou (Little Missouri) and Grade 2 winner Flitch (Demons Begone).
Flat Jack, whose family also includes Grade 1 victor My Big Boy (Our Hero), traces back to the legendary blue hen *La Troienne (*Teddy).
At the end of trading Tuesday, 297 had sold for $7,968,900, a rise of 25.3 percent from the corresponding session in 2011 when 254 horses brought $6,358,800. The session average rose 7.2 percent, from, $25,035 to $26,831, while the median was up 16.7 percent, from $12,000 to $14,000.
After two days the auction has sold 590 yearlings for $15,199,100, a rise of 36 percent over this point a year ago when 475 head had grossed $11,170,700. The sale average is up 9.5 percent, from $23,517 to $25,761, while the median has risen 8.3 percent, from $12,000 to $13,000.
