Nelson Bunker Hunt's Seinne will attempt to become the fourth surface switching stakes winner of the young Santa Anita meet when trainer Ron McAnally sends out the Chilean-bred in Saturday's $200,000 San Pasqual Handicap (gr. III).
"He's run on dirt and turf, and we figured dirt might be a little bit easier on him at this time because Bobby's (Frankel) got all those monsters over there," McAnally said. "You've got to try to duck them. If he runs well (in the San Pasqual), then there's always better things."
Better things might include the Santa Anita Handicap (gr. I), for which the San Pasqual is the first in a series of prep races.
Seinne (Hussonet--White Lady, by Worldwatch) has made three starts since switching to McAnally's barn, winning two of them, including his North American debut on the main track at Del Mar.
"He's just been a nice honest horse," jockey Chris McCarron said. "He obviously ran well down in South America before he came here and he's done well since he's been here. It didn't seem to me like he preferred one surface more than the other."
McCarron will be in the irons on Saturday, as he has in all of Seinne's local starts.
The field for the 1 1/16-mile feature will consist of:
1--(E) Milwaukee Brew, Alex Solis, 114
2--Casey Griffin, Eddie Delahoussaye, 114
3--Red Eye, Danny Sorenson, 112
4--Last Parade, Laffit Pincay Jr., 114
5--Seinne, Chris McCarron, 113
6--Irisheyesareflying, Kent Desormeaux, 119
7--(E) Euchre, Garrett Gomez, 120
8--Wooden Phone, David Flores, 119.
(E)--Denotes Stronach Stables entry.
