Officials from Churchill Downs, New York Racing Association, the Maryland Jockey Club, and Triple Crown Productions have begun the process of accepting applications for the early nomination period for this year's Visa Triple Crown.

The Triple Crown consists of the Kentucky Derby, scheduled for May 4 at Churchill Downs, the May 18 Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Racecourse, and the June 8 Belmont Stakes.

Early deadline to nominate to the Visa Triple Crown Challenge is Jan. 19 at a cost of $600 per nomination. Late nominations, at a cost of $6,000 per horse, will be accepted between Jan. 20-March 30.

Nomination applications have been mailed to some trainers and horse owners. Representatives of Triple Crown Productions and the three host tracks are scheduled to visit North American racetracks beginning Jan. 7 to distribute and accept nomination forms.

Nominations also can be made by calling the racing offices at each of the tracks or via Internet. Electronic nominations will be accepted for those using Visa credit card for payment. A copy of the nomination application available on the Web site can be printed and mailed to Triple Crown Productions.
