John and Betty Mabee's homebred millionaire Excellent Meeting arrived at the couple's Golden Eagle Farm near Ramona, Calif., on Aug. 16 following the announcement of her retirement from racing. The 4-year-old filly finished fifth in the Aug. 12 Clement L. Hirsch Handicap (gr. II) at Del Mar. Excellent Meeting won eight of 20 races and earned $1,402,396 while racing in the Golden Eagle silks..
“She's paid her dues,” said Mrs. Mabee. Breeding plans for Excellent Meeting will be announced later.
Excellent Meeting (General Meeting—Fitted Crown, by Chief's Crown) scored grade I wins in the 1998 Hollywood Starlet and Oak Leaf Stakes and the 1999 Santa Anita Oaks and Las Virgenes Stakes. She also captured the grade II Del Mar Debutante, Fantasy, and Princess Stakes during those years, and her seven career stakes-placings included a runner-up effort in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (gr. I) and third-place finishes in this year's Vanity (gr. I) and Milady Breeders' Cup (gr. I) Handicaps.
