Ramon Dominguez rode two winners on Monday to clinch his first national jockey title, ending 2001 with 431 victories. The 25-year old, who finished third in last year's standings with 361 victories, defeated Russell Baze, a six-time national leader by wins. Last year, Baze led North America with 412 triumphs. Baze also led for five consecutive years, from 1992-96."I am overwhelmed, the last couple of weeks have been exciting," said Dominguez. "Never in my wildest dreams would have I expected to be the leading rider in the country. It is truly an honor to have my name mentioned with those other great riders.Other national leaders by wins include three-time winner Edgar Prado (1997-99), Pat Day (a six-time leader, most recently in 1991), and Kent Desormeaux (three-time winner who set the all-time victory mark with 598 wins in 1989).
