Mr. and Mrs. Martin J. Wygod's Tranquility Lake earned her second victory of the year from as many starts and jockey Eddie Delahoussaye earned his third victory on the day when the two teamed up for a front-running win in the $136,950 Palomar Handicap (gr. IIIT) Wednesday at Del Mar.
Tranquility Lake established the lead as they raced to the main turf track from the starting chute, continued at an honest pace (:24.11 and :48.12) around the first turn and along the backstretch, and pulled away from the field at the top of the stretch en route to the victory. Tout Charmant finished 2 1/2 lengths back in second, with Miss of Wales finishing third in her North American debut. Spanish Fern came home fourth, followed by Sweet Life, Evening Promise, and Caffe Latte. Over firm turf, the winner completed the 1 1/16 miles in 1:41.01
Five-year-old Tranquility Lake (Rahy--Winters' Love, by Danzig) is trained by Julio Canani and earned $82,170 for the win. In her only other start of the year, she won the $78,000 Royal Heroine Stakes at Hollywood Park in July. As a 4-year-old, she earned victories in both the Santa Barbara Handicap (gr. IIT) and the Gamely Breeders' Cup Handicap (gr. IT). She was bred in Kentucky by North Central Bloodstock.
