Trainer Scott Lake saddled his 400th winner of the year Sunday at Philadelphia Park when Skipjack Cove went wire-to-wire to win a 5 1/2-furlong claiming event. Lake joins Jack Van Berg (495) as the only trainers to win 400 or more races in a year.
"It was a tremendous thrill, a great feeling," said Lake. "The culmination of a lot of hard work. I was also happy to be able to share it with those closest to me. My three assistants, Steve Krebs, Tim Hooper and Sam Righter all came in. My girlfriend Jen was here (Jennifer Stisted) and my daughter Emily."
Lake's winning percentage for the year is over 26 percent, with purse earnings of well over $7 million.
"Our goal at the beginning of the season was that 495," said Lake. "We'll retool and give it another shot next year."
