The $68,000 paid for a gelded son of Old Topper was the highest price paid in 10 years at the annual yearling sale conducted by the Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society (Alberta division).
Boosted by the sale topper, purchased by Riversedge Racing Stable of Okotoks, Alberta from the consignment of Vern & Debbie Hrycuik, the Sept. 16 sale at Northlands Park EXPO Centre in Edmonton produced a sizeable gross over last year.
According to the CTHS (Alberta), the 58 yearlings sold grossed $489,400, compared with a total $296,400 paid for 35 head in 2011. The average price fell slightly from $8,469 a year ago to $8,438 this year. There were 18 RNAs in 2012, one more than in 2011.
Produced from the winning Shadeed mare Miami Margie, the Alberta-bred sale topper is a full brother to stakes winners Topper Shopper and Ain't No Other and a half brother to stakes winner Go Kitty Go.
