With a nine-length victory in the Oneonta Handicap, a non-betting exhibition at Saratoga on Aug. 16, 1954, Native Dancer concluded his career with 21 wins from 22 starts. With only three starts that season, all victories, Native Dancer was voted Horse of the Year honors. Native Dancer ranked seventh on The Blood-Horse's "Top 100 Racehorses of the 20th Century."
Racing the fastest six-furlong time of 1:10 for the entire Saratoga meet, Meadow Stable's Secretariat posted his first stakes victory in the Sanford Stakes on Aug. 16, 1972. "Big Red" went on to earn Horse of the Year honors as a 2-year-old, with seven wins in nine starts. Secretariat ranked second, only behind man o' War, on The Blood-Horse's "Top 100 Racehorses of the 20th Century."
