Fran Thompson, Owned Fran's Tack, Dies

Frances V. Thompson, involved with racing for 40 years at racetracks in Florida and elsewhere, died at her home in Safety Harbor, Fla., of thyroid cancer on Sept. 11. She was 70.

Known to friends as Fran, the native of Brush, Colo. began in horse racing with her late husband, trainer Delbert Thompson.

After the loss of her husband, Fran opened Fran’s Tack, which she ran successfully at Tampa Bay Downs, Atlantic City Race Course, and recently at both Hoosier Park and Indiana Downs. She also was a successful owner while in the tack business, racing among others, the good filly Exclusive Pow Wow, a six-time winner of more than $100,000.
