Former D. Wayne Lukas assistant Mike Marlow is expected at Santa Anita on Saturday to begin a career as a public trainer after a 13-year stint with Hall of Famer Lukas... Apprentice jockey Elvis Trujillo, victorious with Briteonzmyday at Hollywood Park on Nov. 28 in his U.S. debut, was kicked in the kidney area by a horse at trainer Paco Gonzalez' barn on Wednesday and is not expected to make his Santa Anita riding debut until sometime next week. "He was lucky he had his flak jacket on," said his agent, Bill (Bear) Barisoff. " X-rays were negative, but the 18-year-old native of Panama was sore. "Just tell everyone Elvis is in the building," Barisoff joked . . . The New York Turf Writers Association has named its 2001 honorees for the NYTWA's 79th annual awards dinner, which will be held at the Gideon Putnam Hotel, Saratoga Springs, N.Y. on Aug. 19, 2002. The honorees and their respective awards are: Barry K. Schwartz, Alfred G. Vanderbilt award for the individual who did the most for racing); Point Given, Secretariat Award (New York's Horse of the Year); Tiznow, C.V. Whitney Award (Special Achievement); Bobby Frankel, Fourstardave Award (Outstanding Achievement in Saratoga); Eugene Melnyk, Red Smith Good Guy Award; Juddmonte & Edmund Gann / The Thoroughbred Corporation, Outstanding Owner/Outstanding Breeder; Bobby Frankel, Woody Stephens Award for Outstanding Trainer; Jerry Bailey / John Velazquez (tie), Eddie Arcaro Award for Outstanding Jockey; Say Florida Sandy, Big Apple Award (Top New York Bred)... Suffolk Downs has increased purses for the second time since September, effective with the winter/spring meet that begins Jan. 1, 2002. Chief operating officer Robert O'Malley said the increase, in which overnight purses will be raised to an average of $92,000 per day, is a result of recent approval of legislation that provides the Massachusetts track with additional sources of income and the right to implement account wagering.
