Stormy Lord returns to Philadelphia's Parx Racing Sept. 15 as the 2-1 favorite to defend his title in the $250,000 PTHA President's Cup, a 1 1/8-mile turf test that drew a field of 10 older horses.
The President's Cup is the track's premier race for males running long on the grass. Stormy Lord, a 5-year-old gelded son of Stormy Atlantic , races for top Canadian trainer Ian Black and will have one of Canada's top jockeys, James McAleney, in the saddle.
This year's President's Cup is the 11th race on the Parx program with a 5:08 p.m. EDT scheduled post time.
A four-time winner in 2011, David Willmot's Kinghaven Farms homebred Stormy Lord, also owned by Hat Trick Stable, became a millionaire in his last start, a close second in the Sky Classic (Can-II) at Woodbine. While yet to win in five starts this year, he's been competing against some of Canada's top grass horses all year, making three of those starts in grade II company.
Stormy Lord came to Parx last year as a 9-1 outsider in the President's Cup. Racing just off the pace, he rallied strongly to lead turning for home and edged away to a clear-cut victory. A horse that almost always fires, he's been first or second in 15 of 26 lifetime starts and now sports earnings of $1,003,686.
New-York bred Cantonic, on a four-race win streak for trainer Mike Maker and Damchu Stables, makes his stakes debut in the President's Cup. He is pegged at 3-1 on the morning line. A 6-year-old gelding by Candy Ride , Cantonic has split his time recently between Parx and New York, and is coming off an Aug. 31 victory over a starter optional claiming field at Saratoga Race Course.
Max Berketa and Pinnacle Racing's Kara's Orientation, also based at Woodbine, looks to get in the 2012 win column for trainer Steven Chircop after five fruitless efforts. The 5 year-old son of Orientate won last year's Sky Classic in memorable front-running fashion, opening a 17-length lead on the backstretch and then staying on to win by 2 3/4 lengths. Listed at 9-2 on the morning line, Kara's Orientation is again expected to show speed under local jockey Kendrick Carmouche.
Freud's Honour (6-1) and Roman Tiger (8-1) are also expected to take some action.
Looking for his first win of the year for trainer Gregory Sacco, Freud's Honour is a 4-year-old New Jersey-bred colt by Freud that ran fourth in the United Nations (gr. IT) at Monmouth Park July 7. He finished four lengths behind the victorious Turbo Compressor at odds of 65-1. In his subsequent start, the East Hanover Stakes at Penn National Race Course July 28, Freud's Honour again was fourth.
With an expected strong pace, Dennis Manning's Roman Tiger could prove to be a factor. The 7-year-old gelded son of Tiger Ridge comes in from Monmouth as a two-time stakes winner this year. After finishing sixth behind multiple grade I winner Little Mike in the Sunshine Millions Turf to start his season, he pulled off a 28-1 upset victory in the Tampa Bay Stakes (gr. IIIT) at Tampa Bay Downs. He quickly backed that up with an off-the-pace win in the Turf Classic over the Tampa course.
Since coming north for the summer season, Roman Tiger has faced tough company in the Monmouth Cup (gr. IIT) and Oceanport (gr. IIIT) with little success. He looks to get back on track with Victor Santiago aboard. Roman Tiger is the 122-pound highweight; he has been assigned nine more than each of his rivals.
