Barbara D. Livingston's Eclipse Award-winning photo.
Barbara D. Livingston's photo of a Thoroughbred during a workout, which appeared on the cover of the March/April 2001 issue of The Thoroughbred Chronicle
, has won the Eclipse Award for Photography. This is Livingston's second Eclipse Award for photography.
Livingston is a regular contributor to The Blood-Horse
, whose parent company published a book of her work entitled "Four Seasons." Another book featuring Livingston's photos will be published by Blood-Horse Publications in 2002.
Livingston lives in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.
The photo was selected by a panel of judges that included Steve Fine, director of photography for Sports Illustrated, Clement H. Murray, director of photography for The Philadelphia Inquirer, Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer Todd Buchanan, Jim Gensheimer, a photojournalist with the San Jose Mercury News, and Julia Schmalz, a sports photo editor at USA TODAY.
Livingston's close-up shot shows the head and neck of New York-bred filly Truebreadpudding in a powerful, athletic pose. "I picked (Livingston's photo) for first because I thought the veins in the horse's neck were very compelling," Schmalz said. "I just kept studying the picture."
"The filly galloped by twice that morning," Livingston said. "The first time, I was talking with someone and just noticed how strong and masculine and striking she was, even though I didn't know who she was. The second time around, I photographed her, just trying to capture a bit of her 'fire.' When The Thoroughbred Chronicle asked if I had anything striking to start off their new magazine, I just sent it on spec -- to be honest, I thought it was too unusual for them to choose it."
Media Eclipse Award winners will be honored at the 31st annual Eclipse Awards Dinner, to be held Monday, Feb. 18, 2002, at the new, $800 million Westin Diplomat Resort and Spa in Hollywood, Fla.
