Group Appeals Latest Ruling in Ohio VLT Case

The Ohio Roundtable, a public policy group challenging the 2011 law authorizing racetrack video lottery terminals in Ohio, has appealed a common pleas court ruling that found the organization lacks standing in the case.

The group, which just met the Aug. 30 deadline to appeal the May 2012 ruling, argues the trial court erred in dismissing its claims and should have allowed the Ohio Roundtable to file an amended complaint before dismissing the claim.

It has asked the Court of Appeals in the 10th Appellate District of Franklin County to vacate the trial court's ruling and remand it for further action.

Racetrack VLTs were authorized by Republican Gov. John Kasich and the state legislature. The policy group contends a statewide referendum is needed, as was the case for four full-scale casinos approved by Ohio voters several years ago.

Scioto Downs in Columbus is the only one of seven tracks in the state operating VLTs. Most of the others, however, are moving forward by seeking the necessary approvals from the Ohio State Racing Commission and Ohio Lottery Commission.
