Jockey Garrett Gomez and Caballo Press of Ann Arbor, Mich., have made a contribution of $10,000 to the Winners Foundation, which helps individuals and families in the racing industry with alcohol, substance abuse, and mental health issues.
The presentation took place Aug. 11 at Del Mar Race Course, with an oversized check to Bob Fletcher, The Winners Foundation’s executive director.
According to a release from Caballo Press, the donation is a combination of select proceeds from Caballo Press sales of "The Garrett Gomez Story: A Jockey’s Journey Through Addiction & Salvation," as well as Gomez’s donation of all of his royalties from the book. The book was written by Rudolph "Rudy" Alvarado with Gomez. Alvarado is also publisher and CEO of Caballo Press of Ann Arbor.
"Without the Winners Foundation, I wouldn’t be where I am today,” said Gomez in the release. "They were there for me at the beginning and have been there for me to this very day. My family and I could never thank them enough."
