Win City, a Slew City Slew colt who upset trainer Mark Frostad's Canadian Triple Crown bid by defeating Dancethruthedawn in the Prince of Wales Stakes, was named Horse of the Year in Canada.
The connections of Win City and other Sovereign Award winners were honored when the awards were presented by the Jockey Club of Canada Friday night at the Four Seasons Hotel in Toronto.
A homebred for Frank DiGiulio, Win City won six of nine starts, with one second and two thirds, while earning CAN$876,187 in 2001.
Sam-Son Farms again went home with awards for top breeder and owner. In addition, Sam-Sons' Dance Smarlty, who won three Sovereign Awards during her racing career, was honored as Broodmare of the Year. A 13-year-old daughter of Danzig who was Canada's Horse of the Year in 1991, Dance Smartly has been represented by two stakes winners from five foals. Her 3-year-old daughter sired by Mr. Prospector, Dancethruthedawn, won the Queen's Plate and was honored as champion 3-year-old filly in Canada.
