"He has a small tear in the suspensory (ligament)," trainer Dan Vella told Woodbine officials July 30. "We discovered it a couple of days ago. The long-term prognosis is very good, but he's out for the year."
Strait of Dover, by English Channel , is owned by Wally and Terry Leong's British Columbia-based Canyon Farms. The Breeders' Stakes is the third leg of the Canadian Triple Crown.
Vella skipped the Prince of Wales, the middle leg of the three-race series on dirt at Fort Erie Racetrack, to prepare Strait of Dover for the 1 1/2-mile Breeders' Stakes. Vella said he was prepping forwardly.
"His work on the turf was awesome, and I expected him to run very well," Vella said.
Vella said Strait of Dover will remain in his care at Woodbine for the next month. Strait of Dover has four wins of seven career starts for lifetime earnings of $765,449.
