Eight-year-old gelding Get Serious looks to turn back the clock once again when he goes for his third victory in the $150,000 Oceanport Stakes (gr. IIIT) over his favored Monmouth Park turf course July 29.
Scratched from the race last year by trainer John Forbes, Get Serious won the 1 1/16-mile Oceanport in both 2009 and 2010. Owned by J.M. Dinan and Phantom House Farm, the chestnut son of City Zip is coming off a front-running victory in Monmouth's Red Bank Stakes (gr. IIIT) July 4, his third victory in that particular event.
Get Serious ended a six-race losing streak with his win in the one-mile Red Bank.
Overall, Get Serious has amassed 11 of his 14 career wins on the Monmouth turf course, which he has raced on 19 times. The lifetime earner of more than $1 million was assigned co-high weight of 123 pounds for this year's Oceanport. Regular rider Pablo Fragoso has the mount on Get Serious, who drew the rail in the eight-horse field. He is the second choice on the morning line at 2-1.
The race is one of six stakes on the Monmouth program Sunday and immediately precedes the big event on the card, the $1 million Haskell Invitational (gr. I). The Oceanport is race 12 with an estimated post time of 5:40 p.m. EDT.
Also assigned 123 pounds is Roman Tiger, who ran third behind Get Serious in the 2010 renewal of the Oceanport. Roman Tiger (8-1) began the year with two victories from three starts in Florida for trainer and owner Dennis Manning. But the 7-year-old Tiger Ridge gelding has been dull recently with back-to-back last-place finishes, including the Sussex Stakes at Delaware Park July 21. Angel Serpa rides.
Another getting a second shot at Get Serious is Mill House's Queen'splatekitten, third in the Red Bank when beaten by less than two lengths. The 4-year-old Kitten's Joy colt gets a seven-pound break in the weights for his rematch with Get Serious. Todd Pletcher trains Queen'splatekitten, the 9-5 morning line favorite still seeking his first graded stakes win. Javier Castellano is aboard.
Stuart Janney's homebred Admiral Perry (5-1) steps into graded stakes company for trainer Shug McGaughey for the first time in this race. The move follows a solid win as the favorite over allowance/optional claimers July 1 over the course at the Oceanport distance.
Two Rivers Racing Stable's Crepuscolo (8-1) makes a big jump up the class ladder following a 12 1/4-length demolishing of a starter allowance field on the Monmouth main track July 7. He earned a 95 Beyer speed figure.
