Three individuals and two horses have been selected for induction into the Washington Racing Hall of Fame this year.
According to a release from Emerald Downs, the class of 2012 includes jockey Paul Frey, trainer Wayne Branch, and breeder George Newell, as well as the horses Hilco Scamper and Rings a Chime.
The Washington Racing Hall of Fame’s 10th annual induction ceremony is scheduled for 7 p.m. (PDT) Aug. 18 at Emerald Downs, on the eve of the 77th running of the $200,000 Longacres Mile (gr. III). At the ceremony, Emerald Downs vice president Jack Hodge will be honored for Lifetime Achievement, becoming the sixth recipient of the award.
Branch, who won five training titles at Longacres, and Frey, fourth on the all-time riders’ list at Longacres, combined to win some 500 races in Washington and Arizona in the 1950s and 1960s, according to records. A native of Saskatchewan, Frey rode 2,479 winners in a 20-year career from 1953-72.
Hilco Scamper, the 1985 Washington Horse of the Year bred by John and Mary Roche, was trained by Mike Chambers to win eight of 20 starts, including the Hollywood Juvenile Championship Stakes and Sapling Stakes, both grade II. According to Emerald Downs, the gelded son of Knights Choice maintained his quickness as older horse, competing in 870-yard dashes against Quarter Horses.
Rings a Chime, a multiple Washington champion, won the 2000 Ashland Stakes (gr. I) and finished second in that year’s Kentucky Oaks (gr. I). Bred by Mr. and Mrs. William T. Griffin, the daughter of Metfield won or placed in 11 of 13 starts and earned $606,315 for trainers Lloyd Mason and Lonnie Arterburn.
Newell operated Newellhurst Farm, a 100-acre farm in Kingston on the Kitsap Peninsula, and stood the sires Black Forest and Better Bet in the 1940s and 1950s. Newell also raced 11-time stakes winner How Now and Collaborator, who in 1958 became the last horse to sweep the Longacres Mile and Longacres Derby in the same year.
