A new nomination process for the 2012 Claiming Crown has been put in place by Claiming Crown Limited. The new process for the seven races with a total of $850,000 in purses has been streamlined and changed so that both trainers and horses must be nominated to the event, according to a July 24 announcement of the changes.

The Claiming Crown will be held at Gulfstream Park Racing & Casino Saturday, Dec. 1.

“Rather than having trainers nominating horses this far out from the Claiming Crown, we felt it would be easier to change the nominating process,” said Dan Bork, racing secretary at Gulfstream Park. “Trainers who nominate a horse in August for the event may not have that horse by Dec. 1. We believe this also gives trainers the ability to get a horse for one of the Claiming Crown’s seven races or make a horse they currently have eligible for the event.  We think this will also continue to create interest in the Claiming Crown.”

Under the new process, on or before Aug. 31 trainers must pay a $100 fee to be eligible to nominate horses to the 2012 Claiming Crown. Similar to a seat license, this fee enables a trainer to nominate horses by regular nomination, according to Claiming Crown organizers. Trainers not making this payment will only be able to nominate horses through the supplemental nomination process.

Eligible trainers may nominate horses to Claiming Crown races on or before Nov. 9. Both the horse and Claiming Crown race must be named at the time of nomination.

Supplemental nominations and entries will be taken on Nov. 28. The fee for supplemental nominations is 5% of the purse.

Previously, one would have to nominate a horse for $100 by Aug. 31 or buy an open nomination for $250 by Aug. 31 and name a horse by mid-October. If someone missed the Aug. 31 deadline, they could nominate a horse for $500 by mid-October. Next, about 10 days prior to the event a nominee would pre-enter in a specific Claiming Crown race and then finally enter the race the day entries were taken.
