Days after the defection of Breeders' Cup Mile (gr. IT) winner Val Royal from the Hong Kong Mile (HK-I), the race at Sha Tin Racecourse lost another prospective entrant Friday when it was announced that Sagitta Two Thousand Guineas (Eng-I) runner-up Tamburlaine will also miss the Dec.16 race. Royal Academy sired both Val Royal and Tamburlaine.
Tamburlaine was withdrawn after failing to scope clean Friday following a workout on Thursday. Tamburlaine has won just one of 12 career starts but has finished second in four group stakes events.
Tamburlaine will be replaced in the Mile by Super Molly, stablemate of Mile prospect Charming City.
"I spoke to (Super Molly's trainer) David Hayes (Friday) and he is delighted that Super Molly, who is clearly one of Hong Kong's rising stars, can run in the Mile," said Winfried Engelbrecht-Bresges, the Hong Kong Jockey Club's executive director of racing. "I know that his owners are also thrilled at the prospect of having a runner in the International Races."
Val Royal was withdrawn earlier in the week after developing what trainer Julio Canani deemed a minor quarter crack.
The declaration of runners will be announced Thursday. Among the likely entrants is Godolphin's China Visit.
"We are happy with him but his best form is with a bit of cut in the ground so we are hoping the going will not be too fast for him in the Hong Kong Mile," said Simon Crisford, Godolphin's racing manager.
