Went the Day Well

Team Valor International’s Went the Day Well, winner of the Vinery Racing Spiral Stakes (gr. III) and a fast-closing fourth in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I), will not run again this year due to bone bruising in his front ankles, Team Valor president Barry Irwin told Blood-Horse July 17.

"Fortunately there are no fractures or chips or spurs, but the deep bone bruising in his front ankles was severe," Irwin said. "It is probably why he ran so poorly in the Preakness (gr. I). It didn't show up until he was put back in hard training and breezed."

The son of Proud Citizen  –Tiz Maie's Day, by Tiznow  , trained by Graham Motion, began his career in England under the care of trainer Ed McMahon and was purchased by Team Valor following two strong seconds in maiden races. Following a fourth-place finish in his U.S. debut at Gulfstream he broke his maiden going 1 1/16 miles, then followed that up with a 3 1/2-length score in the Spiral.

In the Derby he rallied from 17^th to finish fourth, beaten only 2 1/2 lengths at odds of 30-1. Off that effort, he was bet down to 5-1 in the Preakness but never fired, finishing far back in 10th.
