Patsy C. Symons' Gitchie Goomie got her first graded stakes score in the $250,000 Dr. James Penny Memorial Handicap (gr. IIIT) (VIDEO) at Parx Racing July 3, angling out from behind horses and overcoming the frontrunners in the final strides.
The 5-year-old daughter of City Zip came off her second consecutive victory in the May 26 Mount Vernon Stakes to score in the 1 1/16-mile turf event for trainer Rick Violette Jr.
Jockey Alan Garcia kept Gitchie Goomie well back in sixth off a pace set by Safe Crossing, who led the field of eight through easy early fractions of :24.69 for the quarter and :48.72 for the half. As Safe Crossing went three-quarters in 1:12.15 followed by Pinch Pie and Julie's Love, Gitchie Goomie dropped back to seventh and was stuck behind horses on the rail.
A seam opened up turning for home, however, and Garcia was able to angle the bay mare three wide to set down for the drive. They went a mile in 1:35.54 while Gitchie Goomie closed ground with a rapid late surge, holding off 9-2 favorite Hessonite to get the victory by half a length in a final time of 1:41.23.
Sent off at odds of 3-1, Gitchie Goomie returned $8.20, $3.20, and $2.40 to win, while Hessonite paid $5 and $3.20 to place and Julie's Love brought $3.60 to show. Completed the order of finish were Safe Crossing, Naples Bay, My Redbyrd, Clare Skies Ahead, and Pinch Pie. Laughing scratched.
Gitchie Goomie was bred in New York by Barry R. Ostrager out of the Brief Ruckus mare Riotous Miss. She now has a 7-9-1 record from 19 starts, with earnings of $648,020.
