Hallowed Dreams' attempt to win a record 17 straight races came up short when the daughter of Malagra finished third in the $36,500 Millennium Stakes at Evangeline Downs on Saturday. Sent off as the 1-10 favorite in the five-horse field, Hallowed Dreams bobbled at the start and stalked leader Sparkles of Luck through fast fractions of :21.20 and :44.40 for a half-mile in the six furlong test. Sparkles of Luck, a Louisiana-bred daughter of Mr. Sparkles trained by Keith L. Bourgeois for Rowell Enterprises Inc., drew clear to win by two lengths over Ides Beware, getting the three-quarters of a mile in 1:10.80. With win and place wagering only and the heavy favorite, who had tied a modern-day record of 16 consecutive wins in her last start, finishing third, the winner paid $21 and $76.60 and runner-up Ides Beware returned $115.20 to place. The top two combined for a $127.40 exacta. (Chart, Equibase)
