Frost Giant , the 2008 Suburban Handicap (gr. I) winner, sired his first winner when Zekes Surprise won at Belmont Park June 27. The 2-year-old filly won the 5 1/2-furlong maiden special weight race by 6 1/2 lengths in 1:05.40 for owner Bob Petersons Stables (VIDEO).
Bred in New York by J. S. Burns IV, Zekes Surprise is out of the winning Marquetry mare Marquet Rate, whose dam is stakes winner Big Bozo. Zekes Surprise was purchased by Anthony Melfi for $23,000 from the Stone Bridge Farm, agent, consignment to Fasig-Tipton New York's 2011 Preferred New York-Bred Yearling Sale at Saratoga.
Frost Giant, who also was a group III winner in Ireland, is by Giant's Causeway out of the Gone West mare Takesmybreathaway. He stands for $5,000 at Vinery New York at Sugar Maple near Poughquag, N.Y.
