Average And Gross Rise During Tattersalls' First Session

The Tattersalls December breeding stock sale got off to a fast start in England on Monday, with the gross revenue and average price both exceeding last year's first session figures. Tattersalls reported that 194 horses were sold for a total of 8,227,400 guineas, an average of 42,667 guineas, and a median price of 20,000 guineas. The gross and average were up by 28.6% and 27.4%, respectively, from 2000. The median fell by 4.8%.

Last year, 240 horses were sold for a gross of 6,398,900 guineas, an average of 33,502 guineas, and a median of 21,000 guineas.

Miletrian, a champion in England, brought the session's top price of 700,000 guineas. A 4-year-old broodmare prospect by Marju, Miletrian won the Ribblesdale (Eng-II) and Rothmans Royals Park Hill (Eng-III) Stakes last year. She is a half-sister to 2001 group II winner Mr. Combustible.
Consigned by Mick Channon's West Ilsley Stables, Miletrian was purchased by Kentucky horseman Reiley McDonald of Eaton Sales. McDonald said he was representing an American client, who plans to breed the filly Galileo.

The immediate underbidder was Phillipa Cooper of Normandie Stud. Katsumi Yoshida of Japan also tried to buy Miletrian.

Leggy Lou, a 2-year-old filly who won this year's Princess Margaret Stakes (Eng-III) brought 500,000 guineas. Offered by Jeremy Noseda's Shalfleet Stables, she was purchased by Ashtown House Stud's Paul Shanahan, a member of the Coolmore Stud team. Irish bloodstock agent Johm McCormack signed the ticket. The price was the second-highest ever for a European 2-year-old filly in training, behind only the 620,000 guineas paid for Scimitarra during the 1986 edition of the Tattersalls sale. Narvick International's Emmanuel de Seroux and 6C Racing's Andrea Putsch also made bids on Leggy Lou.

A daughter of Mujadil, Leggy Lou will remain in training.

The first session's highest-priced broodmare was Lyrical Dance, who was sold to Barouche Stud for 360,000 guineas. The daughter of Lear Fan is a half-sister to group I winners Nasr El Arab, Pennekamp, and Black Minnaloushe. The immediate underbidder was Charlie Gordon-Watson, who was representing Tom Wilson. Lyrical Dance was sold in foal to Anabaa.
