Another Sovereign Award for Dance Smartly?

Sam-Son Farms' Dance Smartly, who won three Sovereign Awards during her racing career, could earn another of the Canadian honors as a result of her achievements in her second career as a broodmare. Dance Smartly is one of three finalists in the broodmare category on the list of finalists released Monday, Dec. 3 by the Jockey Club of Canada.

The winners will be announced at the time of presentation, including Horse of the Year, at the Sovereign Awards dinner at the Four Seasons Hotel in Toronto on Dec. 14.

Dance Smartly, a 13-year-old daughter of Danzig, was Canadian Horse of the Year and an Eclipse Award winner in the U.S. in 1991, the same year she was honored with a Sovereign Award as champion 3-year-old filly. Dance Smartly was also Canadian champion 2-year-old filly of 1990.

Retired after her 1994 season with 12 wins and five placings in 17 starts and with earnings of more than $3.2-million, Dance Smartly has produced two stakes winners from five foals. Included among her offspring is Dancethruthedawn (by Mr. Prospector), this year's Queen's Plate winner who is among the finalists for a Sovereign Award as champion 3-year-old filly.

The lists of finalists includes Quiet Resolve, last year's Canadian Horse of the Year who is among the finalists in the turf male category.
