Two Jockeys Unseated in Same Race at Belmont

Jockeys Rosie Napravnik and Irad Ortiz, Jr., were unseated during separate incidents in the seventh race at Belmont Park on June 7, with Ortiz being transported to a hospital complaining of neck and back pain.

Napravnik, who stumbled from Indigene Charm as he ducked in at the start of the 1 1/16-mile turf race, quickly sat up and got to her feet a few moments later. She was taken to the first aid room and received clearance from the medical staff to ride.

Ortiz, 19, was unseated at the quarter-pole when his mount, Logical Order, stumbled as Tycoon Cat attempted to squeeze between him and Megalithic. Ortiz was reported to be stable and conscious as he was transported by ambulance to North Shore University Hospital.

Both horses continued on and appeared unhurt after being caught by outriders.

Napravnik, 24, will become only the second female jockey to compete in the Belmont Stakes (gr. I) when she rides longshot Five Sixteen in the 1 1/2-mile race June 9. In 1992, Julie Krone became the first female rider to win a Triple Crown race when she took the Belmont aboard Colonial Affair.
