A son of Sebring topped the opening session of the Magic Millions national yearling sale in Australia, bringing Aust$230,000 ($222,771) June 5. New Zealand bloodstock David Ellis purchased the colt from Tyreel Stud.

The chestnut yearling is a half brother to Maules Creek (by Redoute's Choice  ), who won this year’s Turnpoint Randwick City Stakes in Australia. Their dam, Bramble Rose (by Shinko King), was a champion in New Zealand in 2003 when she captured the Drake International Fashion in the Field New Zealand Oaks (NZ-I).

The results for the first session included a gross of Aust$3,903,000 ($3,780,330) for the 116 horses that were sold. The average price was Aust$33,647 ($32,590). Compared to last year, the gross fell 12.4%, but the average was down less than 1%.

The clearance rate was 69.9%, up from 63.5% in 2011.

“It was a good, even sale today,” said Magic Millions managing director Vin Cox. “We’re very happy with the attendance from around Australia and all corners of the globe; they are here to buy. The internationals were very strong today, purchasing no fewer than 34 lots.”
