The $150,000 Plate Trial, for 3-year-olds at nine furlongs, will be run just before the Woodbine Oaks – Presented by Budweiser. The Plate Trial is the key prep for the $1 million Queen’s Plate, scheduled to be run June 24.
The Ontario-bred son of Belong to Me is bred and owned by Donna and Vern Dubinsky’s Donver Stable and trained by Josie Carroll. That team sent out the filly Inglorious to win last year’s Woodbine Oaks and Queen’s Plate.
Beeker Street is the second foal out of the You and I mare Carah Five. The first foal was the stakes-placed Executive Five (by Bold Executive). Unveiled April 15 Beeker Street broke his maiden by 2 1/4 lengths as the 6-5 favorite. He returned May 5 to wire the field in the Queenston Stakes for Canadian-breds at 7-10. Both efforts came under jockey Patrick Husbands.
Beeker Street will break from post 6 in the Plate Trial. Eleven Ontario-breds have been entered and all will carry 126 pounds.
A hard-charging second in the Queenston was Making Amends. The son of Repent won the 5 1/2-furlong Clarendon Stakes in his debut last year, then kicked off his 3-year-old campaign with a runner-up effort in the OBS Sprint Stakes at the Ocala Training Center. Returning to Woodbine he was off the board in the six-furlong Woodstock Stakes prior to the Queenston.
Making Amends is trained by Mark Casse, who will send three fillies postward in the Woodbine Oaks.
William Sorokolit Sr.’s homebred Classic Bryce shouldn’t have a problem with the nine-furlong distance of the Plate Trial. The son of Grand Slam has made four of his five career starts around two bends, breaking his maiden at 1 1/16 miles last October. This year he has back-to-back runner-up efforts in routes in the April 11 Wando Stakes (to Incredicat, who drew the rail for the Plate Trial) and May 12 Marine Stakes.
Carroll has also entered Drago's Best, a colt she co-owns with Hill ‘n’ Dale Equine Holdings. After running second in a pair of maiden special weight races at Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots this winter, he’s won two races over Woodbine’s Polytrack, both at odds-on. His latest was a six-furlong triumph April 28.
