Godolphin Racing’s Alpha, 12th in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I), returned to the track at Belmont Park May 11 and is under consideration for the Belmont Stakes (gr. I), said Art Magnuson, assistant to trainer Kiaran McLaughlin.
“He’s sound, he’s happy, no problems--he came out of the Derby great,” Magnuson of the Bernardini colt. “There’s no pressure or anything. If he’s fine and doing well, we’d look at the Belmont. It’s something Simon Crisford (Godolphin racing manager) has mentioned. It’s definitely a possibility.”
Alpha won the Count Fleet and Withers Stakes (gr. III), both at Aqueduct, and finished second in the Resorts World Casino New York City Wood Memorial (gr. I) prior to the Derby.
Magnuson said Godolphin’s It's Tricky, winner of the Distaff (gr. II) and the Top Flight (gr. II) in two starts this year, would work either May 13 or 14 as she prepares for the Ogden Phipps Handicap (gr. I) on Memorial Day May 28.
