Kentucky Derby winner Monarchos worked four furlongs at Keeneland on Nov. 24.
In a move that trainer John Ward described as "perfect," Kentucky Derby winner Monarchos worked four furlongs in :52 at Keeneland on Saturday, Nov. 24. The exercise regimen was the last in Kentucky for the son of Maria's Mon before he ships to Florida to begin his 4-year-old campaign in the Donn Handicap.
"He had a really smooth stride and really wanted to get into his work," Ward said of the workout, with Bobby McKnight in the saddle. "That's what he has been doing since he returned to training."
Ward said Monarchos will leave Monday for Gulfstream Park, where he will be part of the 16-horse stable for Ward at the South Florida oval.
Monarchos completed his 2001 campaign prematurely after a crack in his right knee was detected following his third-place finish in the Belmont Stakes.
