Fortunately for Churchill Downs, the overnight storms that dropped 1 1/4 inches of rain on Louisville, Ky., had moved out of the area in time for the May 5 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I), and the result was a record crowd of 165,307 for the 138th renewal of the classic.
Churchill officials said the sun-splashed crowd this year exceeded last year’s record of 164,858.
The previous day, Churchill reported near-record attendance of 112,552 for the Kentucky Oaks (gr. I) card that was interrupted by major thunderstorms.
