Pat Byrne, trainer of Florida Derby (gr. I) winner Take Charge Indy, will donate 10% of his winnings from the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) to the horse rescue organization Second Stride.
Byrne also will put two of the shoes worn by Take Charge Indy in the Florida Derby up for auction at Second Stride’s charity event, to be held on May 1, at Molly Malone's in
Second Stride began with five members who devoted a good portion of their time to try to find homes for retired racehorses. The organization grew and last year it found homes for 60 Thoroughbreds. It has already found homes for 30 horses this year.
They expect that number to be in excess of 100 by the end of the year with the help of fundraisers like the upcoming one. They are hoping the event will be well attended with people who wish to own a part of Florida Derby history, and possibly Kentucky Derby history as well.
“It’s amazing what a group of five women, with a little help from the industry, can do,” said Jean Amick of Second Stride.
Take Charge Indy is expected to arrve in Louisville on May 1, the same day as the charity event.
