Undefeated Frankel may not make his scheduled 2012 debut May 19 due to what is being called a “superficial” injury to a foreleg sustained during an April 11 workout.

Trained by Sir Henry Cecil, Frankel is nine-for-nine with five group I victories and earned $2,210,961. He hasn’t raced since last October at Ascot and was being pointed toward the JLT Lockinge Stakes at Newbury.

In a statement released by the British Press Association, Cecil said the injury appears “superficial,” but the 4-year-colt “will be kept monitored over the next few days.” The trainer said Frankel “is such an extravagant mover that he hit himself” during the gallop at Newmarket in England.

The press association called it an “off-fore” injury. Plans for a gallop the weekend of April 21 are on hold.

Frankel, bred and owned by Juddmonte Farms in Great Britain, is by Galileo out of the Danehill mare Kind.
