"Taking It Day By Day," an article by senior writer Eric Mitchell published in the April 7, 2001 issue of The Blood-Horse, is among finalists for a Sovereign Award. The Jockey Club of Canada on Friday announced the names of the three finalists in each of the Sovereign Award media categories. In addition to Mitchell's article, other finalists in the feature article category are "Rare Friends," by Jennifer Morrison-Learn, published in the Oct. 31, 2000 edition of Canadian Thoroughbred magazine, and "Nijinsky: Lord Of The Dancers," by Muriel Lennox, published in the Nov. 1, 2000 issue of Gallop magazine. The winner will be announced at time of presentation at the 27th Annual Sovereign Awards at Four Seasons Hotel in Toronto on Friday, December 14, 2001...A charitable program involving its affiliate tracks has been unveiled Churchill Downs Inc. According to an announcement from Cathy Z. Rutter, vice president of community relations, the "Win, Place and Share" program will assist local charities with fund-raising during the 2001 holiday season. Churchill's four racetracks conducting live race meets over the next two months--Calder Race Course, Churchill Downs, Hollywood Park and Hoosier Park--will partner with charitable organizations and host fund-raising events in their respective communities. The events will coincide with the renewals of key autumn stakes races at each of the tracks, according to the press release.
